At LookForLoan.com, we want to help you get the best possible price for auto insurance. While there are many factors that go into your ultimate insurance rate, one of the major factors is your driving history. While speeding tickets can often be wiped from your record if you take a defensive driving class, a serious accident can result in soaring rates, and, if there was a fatality and you were at fault, your insurance can be cancelled, and you will have to buy state-regulated pool insurance.

If you're the type who thinks a serious accident can't happen to you, think again, because on average there someone dies in a vehicle accident every 13 seconds, which amounts to over 100 deaths every day.

Driving safely, then, is important to your finances and your life, so it pays to be aware of why crashes occur. There are three categories of significant contributing factors: mechanical failure, road conditions, and driver error, the latter of which is involved in 95% of all motor vehicle accidents worldwide.

Mechanical Failure

Car manufacturers are required to design and build their vehicles to meet specific safety standards, but, whether due to poor engineering, or poor maintenance, things do happen. Onboard computers can crash, and normal wear and tear occurs on a daily bases. As well, there are rare manufacturer recalls when a part in circulation (remember Firestone tires?) has a known fault The most common mechanical failures are with the tires and brakes, and usually those two things are helped along by owner-negligence. 5% of auto accidents are attributable to mechanical failure.

Road Conditions

Whether it's trees blocking a yield sign, potholes that aren't fixed, or just poor planning that leads to stopped traffic and incites overly-aggressive driving, the roads we drive on are a significant contributor to auto accidents. More than 5%, in fact, of all our auto accidents are related to the design or condition of roads. This includes temporary road conditions caused by weather, like rain, snow, and ice. The key to avoiding an accident caused by the road itself: Don't speed. In more than half of motor vehicle accidents, someone was speeding.

Driver Error

  • Speeding
  • Not signaling turns
  • Tailgating
  • Disregarding traffic signs
  • Aggressive lane changing
  • Refusing to yield
  • Driving while intoxicated

What do all those items have in common? They are all examples of driver error, the leading cause of auto accidents. In over 80% of all car accidents driver error was the cause, and in 95% driver error in combination with mechanical failure or poor roads was to blame. As well, most of these behaviors signal aggressive driving habits, and while assertive driving is good, overly aggressive driving can be a pre-cursor to road rage.

In Europe, a recent study concluded that 80% of drivers involved in auto accidents deny responsibility, with only 5% admitting they were to blame - even in part. In addition, the likelihood of having an accident increases by 50% once the sun goes down, so if you're speeding during the day, you become even more of a danger at dusk.

In 2005, there were almost 6.5 million automobile accidents in the United States. The cost of these crashes totaled more than $230 billion. Almost 3 million people were injured and more than 45,000 died. In 14% of those accidents, the person at fault was uninsured. CheapAustosInsurance.com does not want you to be one of these statistics. Stay insured. Drive safely. Stay alive.
